Applied Cognitive Psychology

Problem Solving

Cognitive Engineering relies on the discipline of Applied Cognitive Psychology which concerns all aspects of human cognition and perception. These include the language or visuals employed, the function of memory in accomplishing a task, and the nature of the critical thinking required to perform tasks that often are not well defined. Such tasks as they occur in the workplace require people to make decisions. APL-UW employs empirical studies to understand the process involved.

Decision Making

Decision making is about alternatives and uncertainty. Often the decision is a choice among many possible options none of which are necessarily ideal. Systems need to be designed to move users through the making of decisions without being prescriptive. Once decisions are made the systems must support those decisions with documentation and visualizations that may need to show the path or reason(s) for the decision to other participants, some of whom may be making parallel decisions, or may be in a position to act upon the decision made.
