Cognitive Engineering

Cognitive engineering (CE) considers how humans assimilate and make use of information. Cognitive engineers use a holistic approach to the design of systems that enhance our ability to perform in complex environments. Under consideration are the ways in which humans solve problems and make decisions. Researchers study attention span, perception, and memory. What is the cognitive load workers must bear when performing their tasks? Researchers study the work environment, its stresses and uncertainties, and then factor in what can be changed and what must remain the same.

Researchers employ various protocols to achieve an efficient and usable system such as Cognitive Task Analysis (CTA), User Centered Design (UCD), and Usability Testing. Also important is a blend of computer graphics and multimedia to make the most efficient comprehension and use of information. Cognitive engineering merges the mental task of work with technology systems that are engineered to aid the accomplishment of work.
